I got word that my grandpa passed away earlier today. He just turned 98. We knew it would be soon, though - he had a cancerous lump on the side of his neck that kept getting larger. He was a farmer, and was farming up until his early 90s. The family eventually made him stop because they were afraid he was going to have a fall when going out to do farm chores.

I think this is probably one of my favourite pictures of him, if not perhaps one of my favourite portrait shots that I’ve taken. Ever since we were kids, we would go visit grandma and grandpa for a week or two during the summer. Us kids would go explore around the farm while the adults stayed inside and chatted around the kitchen table - where this picture was taken.

I’ve been toying around with the idea of turning his old grain truck into a camper (recreational vehicle). It’d be a heck of a lot of work, but could be pretty cool. It’s a 1953 or so GMC. I think it’s a 2 1/2 ton. From what I understand, it still has the original straight-six in it.

I think an old farmer would approve of any project that is a heck of a lot of work. They are funny that way.

I can’t think of a much better tribute. Godspeed, Grandpa.

I’m really thinking about turning it into a camper. Pull the cab off, put it on a newer Silverado chassis. Make either a custom box or a camper to fit the back.

I’d definitely be posting about it if I did it. I’d need all the help I could get!

I’d recommend just cleaning it up and getting it road worthy first. Drive it around. There are many clubs where folks fix up old trucks. Lots of tips on modernizing bits like the brakes.

I’d keep the straight-six and rebuild it.

Really sounds like fun.

With the current straight-six, I’d be surprised if it could reach safe highway speeds (i.e.: not be a hazard on the road). It’d definitely need an overhaul - it burns oil pretty badly, from what I understand. The split rims do scare me, though, and would definitely need to be replaced. It’d also be nice to have disc brakes.

Doing a little searching around, there doesn’t seem to be much on the GMC 9300. I wonder if it was a Canadian only model designation or something.

What a cool project truck. There will be folks galore out there that would talk to you and advise you all day.

Without a load, it ought to go 55 mph pretty well.

Uncomplicated. That would be a great engine to rebuild.

It would be fun just to take Simple Green to the interior and clean it up.

Is it currently drivable?

I’m envious.
